What is role-play?

It’s an activity which requires players to assume roles of fictional characters and collaboratively create stories. You determine your own actions, free to improvise your way through the story while taking into consideration the RP guidelines and sim rules. Your choices during role-play shape the direction and outcome of the story and your character.

  • 1. THE STORY +

In the distant future, Earth emerges from near self-annihilation. In its darkest chapter, mankind inflicts pain, suffering, and the final world war upon itself.

As the chill of nuclear winters blankets the planet, humanity strives to survive and the launch of a new beginning takes place. The first human ship breaks the light barrier and becomes the catalyst to an even greater realization.

    Mankind wasn’t alone.

As peace reigns over the planet, eyes now turn toward the final frontier. The spirit of exploration is rekindled. Innate curiosities and the thirst for knowledge beyond familiar stars usher in a new era for Earth.

New worlds meant new allies – new enemies.

Now, at the turn of the 23rd century, the influence of galactic contact and trade grows. The city of San Francisco experiences a new kind of immigration. Species from across space travel to Earth looking for new opportunities.

Under the command and operational control of Starfleet, the city of San Francisco become home to many traders, civilians, and officers. A subtle unrest also begins to spread amongst the inhabitants. Cultures clash. In the dark undergrounds of the old city, rumors of espionage, syndicate slave trading and other illicit activities exchange.

In the near distance, looming high above, marks the endeavor of a new trek…

  • 2. THE GUIDE+

Built for the sole purpose of quality role-play (RP), it is you who defines how this future unfolds. Be a part in this cosmopolitan community of beings from around the universe.

Meet and interact with others from around the world in an open community which shares a common passion. Experience your “second life” together. Your trek. Your home.

    How to get started:

    1. Read and understand the role-play rules and guidelines.

This information is located in the "Welcome Guide" note given to you upon teleport entry into the Shipyard. Alternatively, you may pickup a copy of this in the OOC Shuttle Bay (same area you teleport into when you arrive into the Shipyard from another location in SL). Look for it on the wall and simply click for a copy.

    2. Join the main role-play group in SL.

To do so, you can either click on the boards that say "Click here for an invite to the group" or simply do a search for "Second Trek Roleplay" (with the quotation marks) in the SL group search window and join.

    3. Explore.

We've created the Shipyard to be an extremely immersive environment. It's also a big place and easy to get lost.

    4. Start thinking about your own character.

You can pickup free basic skins for various races in the OOC area. You'll also need to think about your back story. This is basically a background for your character and how he/she/it fits into this 23rd century we've built. We highly recommend you make a "new pick" in your profile with the Shipyard as the landmark and a description of your story background. This allows folks to understand your character a little bit better when they begin to do some serious role-play with you.

    5. Submit an application for a specific role.

There are many aspects of role-play you can begin to enjoy. From Starfleet (security / medical / engineering), civilians (shop keepers, bartenders, citizens, immigrants, etc.) to criminals (syndicate runners, dealers, smugglers, petty thief, etc.), there's a wide opportunity for you to interact with others. You can find the application guide within the "Welcome Guide" or on the wall in the OOC area.

    6. Join the off-the-grid community!

We've got a community forum on this website as well as a group Flickr! account. Sharing your role-play stories, discussions as well as screenshots will capture and make your RP more visible to others to comment and enjoy.

  • 3. YOUR CHARACTER +

For further details, please refer to the "Appearance" section of the Role-play Guide found in-game in the OOC area or within the "Welcome Guide" given to you upon teleport entry into the Shipyard.

Create a background story for your character.

We encourage you to create a “new pick” in your SL profile with the Shipyard and write your background story into the description field. This not only gets you thinking about how you’d like to develop your character, but also gives other players an idea of the type of RP and general background your character is coming from.

Using our forum, Flickr! and other tools, you are welcome to write about your character development and receive comments from others in SL.

    Pick a race.

Clicking on a picture below will bring up the general characteristic of the race. You are free to claim your character is a mix of races (ie. half Vulcan / half Human). It is up to you how you want to mix the traits and display it through role-play.

Please keep in mind that mixing races to create a “super” character is not recommended as it will often classify your role-play as power gaming. Every character has it’s weaknesses and strengths. Please be sure you keep that aspect balanced so that your interaction with others remains creative and fun.

    Human Vulcan Orion
    Human
    Vulcan
    Orion
    Romulan Andorian Klingon
    Romulan
    Andorian
    Klingon

    Try a skin!

We encourage you to try non-human races with one of the many alien skins we’ve created. You can find the basic version of various races (Vulcan, Andorian, Orion, Romulan and Human) in the OOC area for free.
